Why We Use Citric Acid in Our Cold Process Soap
Hard water contains naturally occurring minerals like calcium and magnesium. While harmless, these minerals can interfere with soap’s ability to lather and cleanse effectively. Instead of producing a rich, bubbly foam, soap can react with these minerals to form what’s commonly known as “soap scum.”

To gently address this, we include a small amount of citric acid in our cold process soap.

Citric acid works by binding to those hard water minerals - a process known as chelation. By “grabbing onto” calcium and magnesium ions, it prevents them from reacting with the soap. The result is a better lather, a cleaner rinse, and less residue left behind on your skin (and your sink).

During the soap-making process, citric acid is neutralized by the lye (sodium hydroxide) and forms sodium citrate, a salt that continues to perform this mineral-binding function in the finished bar.
